The Sage Barista Express is probably one of the most popular home espresso machines in recent years. But after hundreds of reviews, videos, and opinions scattered across the internet, an important question remains:
Is it still worth buying a Sage Barista Express in 2026?
After more than 300 coffees prepared on this machine over about 2 years, our answer is simple:
Yes. It continues to be one of the best value propositions for anyone looking for an all-in-one system up to €700.
It's not perfect. It has limitations. But it remains an extremely competent machine for preparing specialty coffee at home without unnecessary complications.
The test setup
We used the Barista Express for several years before and shortly after Caseta Coffee started to write this review and compare it with other options.
Subsequently, the machine was sold to some friends (Shout out to Rocha and Catarina!) and is currently still in use without any mechanical problems.
Main recipe recently used

Caseta Coffee House Blend
- Dose: 17g
- Yield: 42g
- Extraction time: 25 seconds
We also regularly used:
- Tanzania Caseta Coffee
- Ethiopia Caseta Coffee
- Nicaragua Caseta Coffee
During the tests, we noticed something interesting:
The Barista Express, which features a slow pre-infusion, particularly enjoys balanced and developed coffees that provide a sweet, clean, and consistent cup.
Who should buy a Sage Barista Express?
This machine is ideal for:
- Those who want to get into specialty coffee
- Those with limited kitchen space
- Those looking for a simple solution
- Those who don't want to study espresso for months
- Those who want a single piece of equipment for grinder and machine
If you are looking for a machine to explore every variable in detail, there are probably more interesting options. But for preparing excellent coffee daily without turning the hobby into a second job, it remains a very strong choice.
What we liked
Excellent value proposition

This continues to be the main argument for the Barista Express. When we analyze the complete set, we receive:
- integrated grinder
- PID temperature control
- 54mm group head
- manual steam wand with milk jug with temperature indication.
- solid construction
- Funnel that greatly aids distribution and grinding
At this price, it is still extremely difficult to find such a balanced alternative.
Very compact
One of the most undervalued aspects. Those who live in apartments or small kitchens quickly realize the advantage of having an integrated grinder and machine. Even today, after using much larger machines, we still find it impressive how many features Sage managed to pack into a relatively compact and lightweight format.
Simple and intuitive
Unlike some newer models, the Barista Express maintains an extremely straightforward user experience. There are no complicated menus. There are no dozens of parameters. There are no features that are never used. Making coffee is simple. And that is very valuable for those who just want to prepare a good espresso before heading to work.
Temperature control makes a difference
For this price range, PID continues to be a huge advantage. In our tests, it allowed the machine to adapt better to different roasting profiles.
With lighter roasts, we obtained better results through:
- slight temperature increase
- finer grind
- longer extractions (around 29 seconds)
It doesn't turn the machine into a professional one, but it offers enough flexibility to work with different specialty coffees that deserve attention.
Internal grinder adjustment
Few people talk about this detail. In addition to external adjustments, there is also an internal adjustment of the burrs. On our machine, we used a slightly finer internal adjustment and then normally worked between levels 3 and 6 on the external adjustment, depending on the coffee and roast level. This allowed us to maintain adjustment margin even after several years of use.
54mm group head
In practice, it's an excellent compromise. There is currently a huge variety of compatible accessories:
- tampers
- IMS baskets
- distributors
- funnels
- puck screens
Compared to 51mm systems found in several Delonghi machines or the 57mm group head of the Lelit Anna, the accessories market is clearly more developed.
Surprising robustness
After more than 2 years of use:
- no breakdowns
- no parts replaced other than the water filter
- no significant intervention beyond normal cleaning
The only upgrade made was the occasional use of a bottomless portafilter to observe extractions. For a machine in this price range, it's an excellent result.
What we liked less
Fast heating doesn't mean thermal stability
The machine becomes operational quickly. But there's a difference between being on and being fully stabilized. In our experience, the best results come after approximately 5 additional minutes of heating. We also recommend performing a small flush before extraction. Consistency improves significantly.
The grinder is the main compromise
The grinder does a competent job. But it's not extraordinary. There is some retention. The precision between adjustments could be better. And it's still essential to use a scale. For most users, it will be more than sufficient. For the most demanding coffee geeks, it will end up being the main limitation of the set.
Relatively slow steaming
It is perfectly possible to produce microfoam for latte art. In fact, the smoothness of the steam even helps those who are learning. There's more room to correct errors.
The problem is the speed. It clearly takes longer than more advanced machines. Those who prepare several cappuccinos in a row will notice this limitation.
Not a machine designed for modifications
The Barista Express was designed to work. Not to be constantly modified. Those who enjoy disassembling equipment, swapping components, or making internal upgrades will find little reason to do so here.
How does it perform with specialty coffee?
Better than many people imagine. During the tests, we found that the quality of the coffee used influences the final result much more than most equipment upgrades. In fact, if we had to give only one piece of advice to a Barista Express owner, it would be:
First, invest in quality coffee purchased less than 1 month after roasting and learn to achieve good distribution before thinking about changing machines.
Good specialty coffee does half the work. The coffees that showed the most consistent results during our tests were balanced, sweet, and accessible profiles. Caseta Coffee's House Blend and Tanzania were probably the best match for the machine's profile. Ethiopia also yielded excellent results, although it required more fine-tuning. Nicaragua, on the other hand, proved to be the most challenging due to its fruitier and more complex profile than what we usually look for in a balanced daily cup.
Sage Barista Express vs Bambino Plus + Encore ESP
This is probably the most important comparison currently.
Choose the Barista Express if:
- you have limited space
- you want simplicity
- you want a single piece of equipment
- you don't intend to delve too deeply into the hobby
Choose Bambino + Encore ESP if:
- you like to experiment
- you intend to evolve in espresso
- you value future upgrades
- you want to progressively invest in better grinders
The second option offers greater long-term potential. The first offers a simpler, more integrated experience.
Sage Barista Express vs Lelit Anna
The Lelit Anna produces superior espresso. It has better thermal stability. It has astonishing steaming capacity. And it offers a prosumer machine experience. But it also requires a separate grinder. More investment. More space. More knowledge and more warm-up time, both for espresso and steam, as it uses a boiler and not a thermoblock. For many home users, the simplicity of the Barista Express remains extremely appealing.
Final Verdict
After 2 years of use, we continue to consider the Sage Barista Express one of the best integrated grinder espresso machines available for under €700.
It's not the best machine for coffee geeks.
It's not the machine with the best grinder.
It's not the most evolvable machine.
But it might be the most balanced machine.
For those who want to prepare excellent specialty coffee at home, daily, without unnecessary complications, it remains a very easy recommendation to make.
Even today, after using significantly more expensive equipment, we still believe that the Barista Express delivers impressive results for the required investment. And that explains why it remains one of the most popular machines on the market so many years after its launch.
