The Kirinyaga region, on the slopes of Mount Kenya, is one of the country's most renowned areas for specialty coffee. The altitude of approximately 1,800 meters, deep volcanic soils rich in organic matter, and the region's climatic conditions create a particularly favourable environment for the development of complex and aromatic coffees.
The lot is produced by small farmers associated with the Rwama Farmers Cooperative Society, who deliver their cherries to the Muburi Factory. Established in 1964, the station receives coffee from producers in the communities.
Ripe cherries are hand-picked during the early morning hours and taken to the station, where they undergo an initial selection. After pulping, they are separated by density and fermented overnight in tanks. The coffee is then washed and laid out to dry in the sun on raised beds, with regular monitoring throughout the process.
Muburi Factory also seeks to improve farm sustainability and the conditions of small-scale producers. Good agricultural practices, crop diversification, and disease-resistant varieties such as Ruiru 11 are promoted, helping to reduce reliance on chemical treatments and make production more resilient.
In the cup, it is a fresh, floral, and very aromatic coffee. The medium-high acidity brings a citrusy and vibrant sensation, while apricot adds a fruity and sweet component. Earl Grey appears in the aroma and finish, accompanied by a delicate sweetness reminiscent of wildflower honey. A very expressive profile in filter, but which can work very well as a more complex espresso.
